Wedding Table Centrepieces - Getting Started

Your wedding table centrepieces are the central point of your wedding reception decorations. The centre of your reception tables are where your guests’ attention will be focussed for much of the time and so it is worth giving some time and effort to making sure they have something beautiful and interesting to enjoy while eating, talking to each other and listening to speeches. With a bit of thought you can even provide your guests with something to talk about!

Making the most of your wedding theme

Whether it is just a colour scheme or whether you have a theme for your wedding , your wedding table centrepieces are an excellent place to make it work for you. If you have a colour scheme and are planning on a floral centrepiece, consider adding some other elements using your colour scheme to accent it. This could be a piece of ribbon wrapped around a vase, a piece of fabric swathed around the arrangement or even a few drops of food colouring in water in a glass vase. If you have a theme look for ways to incorporate that in to your centrepieces – for a fairy tale wedding add a silver star tipped wand to your floral display, for an art-deco inspired wedding add feathers and pearl beads to the centrepiece. Miniature semaphore flags could be draped around the vase in a nautically themed wedding or silk banners decorated with the couple’s coat of arms be incorporated in to a medieval themed reception.

Practical tips

Don’t forget to be practical in your centrepiece design – the last thing you want is for your creativity to inconvenience your guests. If you are having a large arrangement on your wedding reception tables make sure it is low enough for your guests to see over. If a tall arrangement would make a bigger impact and enhance the look of the whole room, make sure that the bulk of the arrangement is above the guests’ heads while they are seated.

Give yourself time to plan your wedding table centrepieces and don’t forget to check how they will work with the other items on the table – place settings, name cards, favours and food! A good guide is to have a central arrangement on a round table, but if you have long tables use several small arrangements.

After your reception is over, plan to get the most out of your centrepieces by giving them to important people to take home and enjoy. You could even make your centrepieces your wedding favours by using a collection of small containers for flowers, incorporating gift boxes in the design, or using a cupcake tower for your centrepiece, and at the end of the evening save on cleaning up as your guests will have eaten the centrepiece!
